It's Family Vacation Time!

Our trip to Tennessee is slated to run August 19-27 and should be a great time! We are staying in a "cabin" (really though it's a four-bedroom (all king-size beds), four bathroom, two balcony, hot tub, grill, game room with pool/air hockey table, PS2, rocking chairs on both porches house) with Michelle, Craig, Caitlyn, and Ingrid. The cabin is located in Sevierville which puts us near Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

On the Road Again

IMG_1985 Well, it was quite a memorable trip down.  We loaded the kids into the van about 1 am and they made the transition smoothly (i.e., all were still asleep when we left the driveway).  It was a bit of a rough start for us because we went to bed about 10 but neither of us could fall asleep or get restful sleep once we did.  From 1-3, it was great and I was just starting to nod off.  Picture it, quiet, peaceful driving.  Radio on low.  Pillow rolled up against the door.  Thinking thoughts of mountains.  Then, what is that I hear?  Laughing?  Giggling?  Yep!  I turn around and both kids woke up at the same time.  Ughhh…..  Now, the trick is to get them to sleep.  Easier said than done.  After crying, potty stop (and gas, might as well since the kids were awake), more crying, the kids finally fell asleep…at 5am.  Sophie slept until about 7am and Max about 7:30.  The good thing was that we were able to get south of Cincinnati before rush hour (which we knew from our Florida trip is absolutely ridiculous!)

When Sophie woke up it was the cutest thing; I turned around and she was smiling and she says with a big smile, “I’m on ‘cation!”  In hindsight maybe she had a hard time going to sleep at night because she thought we were still on the way home from Nana and Papa’s and didn’t realize that we were already on our trip.

We stopped at a McDonalds to go in for some breakfast and it was time for Tom to start his first conference call for work (we were able to leave early because he called in to his meetings instead of going in to work).  Tom had done some research ahead of time and found a park in north Kentucky (Crittenden I think) that had a swingset and play structure (he looked at the Google Satellite Map to check it out).  Amazingly, it all worked out.  We pulled up there and I got the kids out to play while Tom was on the phone.  We probably stayed there until around 10 when Tom had to make another call and we were back on the road for that.

The park was well equipped (though maybe it was this yellow swing that did Max in!)

Things were going good until maybe 10-15 minutes into the drive.  Sophie had her DVD player, Max had a DVD movie going.  Then Tom suddenly needs my attention because Max yakked ALL OVER.  Ughhh again……..  So, we pull off at next exit and pull into a little parking lot and I start trying to figure out how I’m going to clean this up without puking.  Gagging was aplenty and Tom was busy with his call so I was on my own.  I pulled out the wagon, stripped him down and put him in clean clothes and then put him in the wagon figuring he’d be good for a bit so I could clean off the car seat and the seat in the car and the base.  Sophie was a trooper through all of this but she was definitely getting restless at the end.  So anyhoo, I have Max in the wagon and am gagging my way through the cleaning when he yaks again.  Ughhh (see a theme!?)……..  So now I have the wagon, car seat, base, and van seat to clean and have no more clean clothes for him (other than digging out a suitcase) so I have to stick him in a Sophie shirt.  We are still about 4 hours away and it’s starting to feel like an eternity!  He’s still fussy and crying and the seats are about as good as I’m going to get them and Sophie is whining and wants out but I just decide we need to get going.  I felt bad because all Max wanted was to be held but we just needed to get going (Tom’s still on conference call).

We get back on the road and Max does fall asleep pretty soon and Sophie is OK but then she gets whiny and needs to stop to go potty (we had a Pull-Up on her the whole time but she was a rock star and didn’t need it) so we pulled off at an exit after about 20 minutes on the road and took her in for a potty break.  Tom was done with his call at this point so he switched to driving and we made our way to the cabin.  Sophie fell asleep after we got back on the road and Max stayed sleeping most of the way.  He was definitely restless the whole way, whining and crying out here and there, but he made it there without another stop.  We’re thinking that maybe he gets car sick.

Made it to the cabin around 2ish (I think) and spent the evening unpacking and settling in.  Had some dogs and burgers on the grill for dinner and turned in around 9 for a much needed night of sleep.
