It's Family Vacation Time!

Our trip to Tennessee is slated to run August 19-27 and should be a great time! We are staying in a "cabin" (really though it's a four-bedroom (all king-size beds), four bathroom, two balcony, hot tub, grill, game room with pool/air hockey table, PS2, rocking chairs on both porches house) with Michelle, Craig, Caitlyn, and Ingrid. The cabin is located in Sevierville which puts us near Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Hike to Laurel Falls

 IMG_2332

On Monday we decided to head on into the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and do a short little IMG_2314waterfall hike.  The hike was listed as 1.2 miles and the trail was paved.  It ended up being a little much for Sophie but she was a trooper for most of it.  The recent dryness probably didn’t do much to help the waterfall but it was still a neat end to the hike and the views up were nice looking back into the valley.  Near the end it got pretty steep off of the trail but I wasn’t real comfortable because Sophie didn’t want to hold my hand all the time and I was partially terrified she was going to hop, hop, hop right off the cliff.  The waterfall had an area toward the top where the trail ended that was open on the rock and you could sit and watch the upper fall and Sophie loved to throw things into the little pool.  Others could also scramble to the bottom and meander among the big rocks but we weren’t that adventurous with the little ones.

IMG_2343 My favorite part of the hike was probably sitting on the rock by the water pool and just finding rocks and twigs for Sophie to throw.  It was nice to listen to the water running and even though it was kind of busy up there, when you’re that close to the rock most everyone is behind you and the water drowns out their noise – it was like we were just hanging out by ourselves.  Hopefully she’ll gain an appreciation of the wilderness so we can keep up our outdoor adventures as a family!

IMG_2326(Sophie loves to pick up sticks when she’s outside and say “chugga-chugga choo”.  I think she’s pretending it’s the whistle that the train lost in Diego when the Bobo Brothers steal it and run down the track with it.)

IMG_2328(Not sure what these guys were looking back at but this is a little drink break on the trip up.  We had to stop once on the way up and once on the way down for Sophie to pee on the side of the trail.  I couldn’t get her to look at me in any of these pictures; that’s kind of a new thing for her, usually she’s such a ham for the camera!)

IMG_2331
(You can’t see it in this view back down a little valley, but most of the trail and woods was full of very large rhododendron plants.  I can only imagine that a hike in the early summer would be absolutely beautiful.  It didn’t seem isolated to this area so I imagine the whole park is full of the wonderful color of the blooms in June or so.)

IMG_2339 It was great to get out and see the Smokies up close and personal – we even got a chance to see some butterflies but that was about the extent of the wildlife on the trail.  My pictures are really rough, I was pointing with one hand while trying to hang on to Sophie with the other, sometimes not even stopping!  Still including them because having something to look at and remember is better than nothing.  Plus, if it’s fuzzy then it just matches my memory!

IMG_2342
After our hike we went out to Mel’s Diner for a little lunch and then back to the cabin for some pool time.  Another great day in the books!

More Sunday!!

IMG_2274 OK, so in going through my pictures I realized that we also went to the pool on Sunday.  I’m including a lot of pictures that may look the same but I just get a kick out of how much Sophie enjoys the pool.  She loves to “kick, kick, kick” and “paddle, paddle” and even shows off by floating on her back now (more swimming backward than floating really).
IMG_2269 IMG_2272 IMG_2270 IMG_2271

IMG_2279Here’s an action show of Sophie jumping to Tom.  I pretty much let her hit the water on her own now and just stop her from going under.  However, sometimes she will ask that you get “closer, closer, closer” until you have to pretty much catch her in the air.  I’m not really sure if she’d actually go under with the floaties but figured it wasn’t worth traumatizing her over at the end of the swimming season (but maybe next year…)

Here’s a shot of the kiddie pool water features…and Caitlyn if you can find her!

IMG_2280

Here she is!
IMG_2282

IMG_2285 I tried so hard to get a picture of Sophie and Max at the pool but for whatever reason she didn’t want to look up.  She did the same thing on Friday when I tried one more time for pictures (but she wanted more pictures when it was just her and her Daddy!)  Not sure if you can tell but she was splashing her feet in the water and then pretty soon Max started to copy her too.  Michelle was holding him in place.  Vacationing with family is great – having extra hands around for everything is wonderful!  Enjoy this little album of one looking, one not with a side of splash splash and silly faces!

Here’s so pictures from outside of the cabin that night.  They show some of the other “cabins” and the lights back in Pigeon Forge and the mountains in the distance.

Sunday continued…

The aquarium was great but Sunday was another day of firsts for us:  Golden Corral.  It was honestly the first buffet that I ever liked.  If you’ve never been, Golden Corral has steak on the buffet.  Fresh, hot off the grill, steak.  Everything was really good and the price was super reasonable so it was a great dinner.  So great that we’re going back tonight (it’s now Friday already and I’m dropping further behind).  It’s also nice that we didn’t have to pay for Sophie, especially since she hardly ate a bite.

I was able to download the pictures from Michelle’s camera but needed to have an adapter to get Ingrid’s pictures off of the Memory Stick so I’ll have to wait until we get back and I can either find my adapter or Ingrid’s USB cord.

Now let’s see if I can remember what we did on Monday…  (You may notice that I took the date/time option off of the display.)

Here Fishy, Fishy, Fishy

IMG_2133 On Sunday, we headed out to the Ripley’s Aquarium in downtown Gatlinburg.  The drive in takes you just inside the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and along a river (I'd have to look it up to find out which one) until you come into Gatlinburg.  While Pigeon Forge consists mostly of a main highway lined with strip malls touting cheap souvenirs, As Seen on TV stores, and a variety of Go-Kart choices, Gatlinburg is more like a little Frankenmuth with streets and alleys lined with little shops and attractions.  For today though, our only plan in the Aquarium (though on the way in we saw a Cooter’s and made a plan to get back there on another day and pick up a souvenir for Mike).

IMG_2134 The Aquarium was definitely worth the ticket price.  Better than a Zoo (didn’t really stink) and Sea World (since we were inside and close to the animals), for what it was showcasing it was arranged beautifully.  The exhibits were laid out in a very kid friendly manner so that there was plenty of room for the wagon and a running Sophie.  It was also neat that a lot of the tanks were in a dark room and just the tank was lit.  Great for viewing but terrible for pictures.  Again, I’ll have to add a last post of pics from the other cameras to supplement what I got.  It was also neat that they would change the music depending on the exhibit:  a stroll through the shark tunnel had a slightly ominous tune while the jellyfish music was more ethereal.  I figure the best way to give details on what we saw is to go through the pics and post a few and narrate what was happening.

IMG_2136IMG_2162Sophie & Caitlyn match today (and if you notice Max is  also coordinated in plaid; cue the “awwwwws”).  It’s been great having her on vacation because not only does Sophie love having her around (“Want to ride in my car, Caitlyn?”) but she’s also been helpful at holding Sophie’s hand or getting stuff for the kids if we ask her to.  Of course, this value is in addition to just having her on vacation too!

Should restate that pictures are hard to see but I’m still going to include them.

IMG_2143Moray Eel – Very cool.  Oh, and the sign said “That’s A-Moray” :)

IMG_2144 Tried silhouette with Tom and Sophie, bummed that it didn’t turn out clear.

IMG_2146 IMG_2149
The little jellyfish and Sophie looking at them.

IMG_2150 The giant sea turtle – always a favorite with Sophie.  She saw a costumed sea turtle character as well and didn’t run screaming; even waved “hi” as it walked away.  Making progress there!  Maybe one day we’ll be able to go to Disney…

IMG_2157IMG_2165
My little photographer.  Unfortunately her pictures didn’t really turn out (too dark and too much movement.)  She also likes to read the signs, sometimes telling us what they say or in this case pointing out the “Big A”.

IMG_2171

The sea horses were pretty cool – plus it was feeding time.  What we thought were baby seahorses was apparently lunch.  Or maybe IMG_2178it was both – not really sure what they were but they were definitely eating them!  The coral reef exhibit was awesome.  It would have been really cool just to sit on the bottom of the tank and let everything swim around you.  Max really got a kick out of all the colorful fish and liked to bang on the glass and squeal.

IMG_2184  Very cool in the shark tunnel (not just sharks, but they were prominent).  This was just before Max ended up peeing on Tom’s shirt.  The moving walkway was at a good pace and the wagon stayed on it.  Plus, you could get off and stay awhile; it’s just nice because if you want to be up by the glass, it moves you along.  The crowds weren’t too bad; I guess we are just past the busy season.

IMG_2193da-dum…….

IMG_2203Which caption:  “Umm, don’t look now, but……”  OR  “How thick is that glass?”

IMG_2223They had a Discovery Cove area after the shark tunnel with a lot of interactive type of stuff for the kids.  There were a couple of exhibits to follow but this was a nice break where you can actually let them run around.  Plus, they had these cool aquariums that you could “get inside”.  I think we have a picture of Sophie on Michelle’s camera.

IMG_2228Family photo time.  The kids were pretty spent and a few exhibits later Sophie got her fingers smashed under a chair so that didn’t work out well.  However, Aunt ‘Chelle saved the day with some french fries and all was well in the world.  She rallied and enjoyed the penguins at the end.  Max was pretty spent though and he watched a few more exhibits in the next dark area and then had a little bottle at the penguin exhibit before leaving.  It was a good time there for sure, and Sophie was asleep before we left Gatlinburg.  Max chose this day to stay awake until about 5 minutes before the cabin.  He was talking and yelling and giggling in the car.  Whenever I would turn around to look at him in his mirror he’d cock his head and smile.  I’m amazed that Sophie didn’t wake up with all of the ruckus.  Ok, let’s join our Aquarium tour in progress:

IMG_2234  IMG_2235
Though not a fan of jellyfish where they can actually touch me, I thought the exhibit was absolutely amazing.  I probably could have sat there for an hour and watched them.  We’ll have to talk to Max about not touching jellyfish at a more appropriate time.  :)

IMG_2253 Apparently, this fine penguin is “Bob”.  The penguin exhibit was cool because there was a tunnel through it for the kids (and Tom) to crawl through.  Added bonus:  it was completely enclosed so it doesn’t smell like a penguin exhibit!

There are always a few shots that I feel are worthy of sharing but don’t quite make the cut of the blog – for those, there’s the album of the Aquarium:

a little behind…

Well, it’s Wednesday and I’m just getting ready to post what we did on Sunday (I think).  So, needless to say, I’m falling a little further behind every day.  A couple of notes about the trip:  Max is getting really good at drinking out of a straw cup (he’d be better at a sippy cup if he could remember the whole “tipping-it-up” thing; ironically, as I watch him now, he’s trying to tilt the straw cup…not very successful at getting water), Sophie’s been in the pool every day, and I’ve bought Sea-Bands for my motion sickness.  It’s amazing but those little bands actually seem to work so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for continued success.  Also, it doesn’t look like I’m going to have time to post now but maybe after I give Max a bottle and get him to sleep……..

chirp, chirp. tweet, tweet. CAW-CAW!!!

Off to Parrot Mountain today for fun with the birdies.  Tried to get some pics on the porch before we left but will have to try again another day when we have better lighting (or have more time to devote to getting a good picture.)  My backup plan is to load all of Michelle’s and Ingrid’s pics to my computer before we leave so they will hopefully make up for my blurry/dark/otherwise undesirable shots.IMG_2000

The drive up the mountain to Parrot Mountain and Gardens was DEFINITELY steep.  Just crossing our fingers that the new transmission makes it through the trip.  Not real crazy about how it’s sounding sometimes.  At least it’s under warranty now…

IMG_2014 Parrot Mountain has some birds in cages but the main interest (to me at least) is the birds that you can hold and feed.  They also had a lot of really nice plants and flowers; I couldn’t tell you what they all are because they appeared to be a variety of exotic species.  Anyway, we were doing good IMG_2015to start with (always risky with Sophie and new things) until we were by some Military Macaws that were extra loud.  That kind of set her off and it took a while for her to recover from that.  Max fell asleep on the way there so he was in the car carrier (which fits nicely into the wagon) for the first part.  It is amazing how many people comment on the wagon; it really is the cat’s meow!

IMG_2022 When you first walk in there are some birds on perches as well as in the cages.  Sophie loves to get her camera out to take pictures.  [That reminds me, I need to download those before she deletes them or drops the camera and loses them!  Maybe I’ll create a separate post for those.  The problem is she moves and clicks a lot; plus the image gets distorted if the camera is jostled around at all.  Maybe some will be worthy!  :)]

IMG_2020 IMG_2021

They’re not kidding when they put signs up saying the birds will bite…Craig tried tempting a few and they were living up to their billing (pun intended).IMG_2024 IMG_2025I would have loved to have taken my time to photograph the birds and plants there but I never got my camera off of “Auto” and barely took time to focus.  Maybe when the kids are older my pictures will start to look a little better again!  Some turned out OK though, so I figured I’d throw them in an album so you could look if you wanted:

IMG_2060When we went into the area that you can buy seed to feed the birds, the basic instructions were “if they are hungry, they’ll bend their heads down”.  I wanted to head first to the little birds – more up Sophie’s alley I figured than the really big ones – but had a couple of pit stops for eager beaks.  The food is out of a dispenser and you get a handful for a quarter.  It consists of sunflower seeds and what looks to be cat food.  It’s funny because the different birds have different preferences.  Some will take as much food as they can before you leave, some will just pick out the cat food, some just the seeds, and one bird in particular liked to take his time and break open the seeds to eat them out of my hand.  Oh, and there was a bird that would take it into his beak, then transfer it to his foot to hold the food while he ate it.  Some were loud and boisterous, and some just talkative.  There was a blue Macaw who liked to earn his keep by saying “Hello” between bites; this was the one that liked to break open the seeds and eat them out of my hand.  Watching them do this up close is really neat.

IMG_2036Anyway, as I was saying, I was heading over to the little birds trying to feed one so Sophie could see that there was nothing to be scared of when this little yellow bird hopped down on the ground and came over to me and hopped up on my hand.  I figured, "cool, I can feed him and put him back” but he had other ideas.   After just a couple of bites he continued up my arm to my shoulder and was nuzzling/pecking at my neck.  It was quite IMG_2043ticklish and I had to get one of the workers to come and remove him for me.  But, it was pretty neat.  I did get a couple of the big birds too, but that was by  choice.  Some you have to peel right off and put them on you and others are easier to convince to step off their perch and onto your arms.  There were a couple of white ones in particular who were quite willing to leave their little spot and join me for a bite or two.

IMG_2038 Max was awake by the time we got to this “bird garden” so we had him out for a bit to see the birdies.  Sophie also gave us a little scare when she ran away (but fortunately it was just back to the wagon to climb in because she wanted a snack).  After a while Ingrid took her up the hill to the waterfall and she was quite content to play with sticks and leaves and look at the water.  I did drag her back down for aIMG_2068 little bit and she got to see “Kiwi”, the smallest of the parrots or macaws or something like that.  (My listening skills have went down hill along with photography and memory.  I blame the kids.)  She wouldn’t let the guy put Kiwi on her shoulder (he keeps the bird in his pocket, it’s really cute) but we did get it on Max’s for a couple of pictures.

Lots of pictures for the bird garden so I’ll make another little album:

IMG_2049
IMG_2080 After the bird garden we went in to feed the nectar-eating birds.  It wasn’t very successful at first because there was a guy in there with a hose IMG_2091and the birds were crazy for water (even though it was shaded there, it was pretty hot!)  I noticed in the bird garden too that when the worker came through with his jug of water the birds all went crazy.  The little ones were bathing in their dishes but all seemed to really want their share.  Eventually the guy left and we were able to coax the birds down for a little nectar.  Craig is the bird-whisperer apparently as he had quite a few on him but we all got at least one (me, Craig, and Caitlyn).  Sophie eventually came in and while she didn’t hold a bird, at least she was close to me while I did.

[I feel like I need to make a side note here to comment on the view while I write this.  I am sitting at the kitchen table looking out over the Smoky Mountains (see view on side of blog, that’s basically what I see) and it really is amazing.  The smokiness of the mountains makes the layering between ranges/hills more distinct and really makes the view; without it I think it would all blend together into a big jumble of green.  Ok, back to the blog.]

IMG_2070 After feeding the nectar to the birds, we hung out by the waterfall for a little longer and then visited a few more birds in cages before leaving.  There was a baby bird nursery but Sophie didn’t want to go in there.  She was hot and tired and hungry and basically done.  She cashed out before we left the driveway at the bottom of the hill of Parrot Mountain.  Max stayed awake until we got home but Sophie didn’t make the transition so Tom took her to the pool while I gave Max some food and put him down for a nap.  He was talking away in the pack and play so I just sat down behind the bed so he couldn’t see me (I had download a short book about Sgt. York from WWI since I was looking for something to read about Tennessee.  If you don’t know the story, it’s truly remarkable.  IMG_2117He singlehandedly shut down a battalion of German machine guns in the hills of the Argonne Forest.  If you really want to hear more, ask me next time and I’ll tell you all about it.  While I’m reading Max is talking and rolling around and eventually he fell asleep hugging his GlowWorm (the light was out at the time because it just came out of the wash from the previous day’s puke-fest so I hadn’t put it back together yet).  Anyway, it was the cutest thing ever.

Dinner was some scrumptious spaghetti here at the cabin and then it was time for a bath (always required after spaghetti night – especially important since I also let Max self-feed some carrots to start the meal!) and bed for the kiddos.  We did get to see some more lightening (the first night there were some wonderful strikes to watch); still waiting to see a big storm pass through one night – I think it would be quite spectacular!

We’ve been really fortunate on our last to vacations to travel with such helpful family.  My mom coming to Florida was an ABSOLUTE life saver and having Ingrid and Michelle here has made the trip MUCH more enjoyable for us since they help with our kids and we can look up and enjoy the vacation too.  Not sure if we’ll vacation alone until the kids are self-sufficient!

Had to add a note about this little froggy that hitched a ride on our car from the mountain.  Hopefully his last ride was a good one!IMG_2113
